Yorkstone Paving – Pathways and Driveways

Yorkstone Paving Is Excellent for Pathways and Driveways

Yorkstone is a sandstone that is formed through the sedimentary process of silt deposited by rivers in Yorkshire, England. It is a stone that has been used for centuries and has a composition of iron oxides, clay, feldspar, mica, and quartz. The stone is very durable and wears well and is widely used in buildings for walls and landscapes as paving. It can vary in color depending on the materials in its composition.

The stone was initially used for building walls and roofs, but in the present day, this stone is more often used for paving. Yorkstone paving has been extensively used for footpaths roads and other uses where advantage can be taken of the stone’s durability and versatility. This paving material has a color that varies from red to brown, with the inside of the stone having a sandy yellow color. Paving is made out of sandstone that can be cut or riven by splitting the blocks apart. Some Yorkshire stone cannot be split and requires to be sawed. These stones are more suitable for building walls and not suitable for paving.

Yorkstone paving that is made of riven blocks has a naturally rough surface for stones that have been split by hand. The paving is generally of a thickness that varies from 40mm to 60mm, but specific thicknesses can be obtained if the quantity so required is large enough. The top grade of this paving is a sandy yellow color and will have dressed edges that allow for uniform patterns in the paving. You can also get such paving in edges that are sawed and where lengths and widths are not equal.

It is best to avoid paving material that has come from soft silty layers and has lamination. Such stone can split when it dries out. The color of the sandstone will vary depending on the amount of iron oxides in the original stone blocks. You will, therefore, find the stone that has colors that range from gray to brown. This variation in color lends its charm to any paving or footpath and can significantly add to its elegance.

Paving is required for any space or area that will see the movement of people across it. It helps such movement to be easy in any place where you need a traversable pathway. Stone paving may not be cheap when you compare it with concrete and other materials, but it gives a natural look that is hard to obtain in any other surfaces. This paving also has a lot of resale value, and can easily be reused if it is carefully removed from its original position.

When the thickness of the paving used is over 70mm, the paving can even be suitable for vehicular movement and if properly laid on a firm foundation can make for excellent residential driveways. The stone weathers and continues to change its characteristics over the years, without in any way losing its ability to perform the function it is laid out for.
